How to Prepare Ceremonial Cacao

More and more folks are awakening to the magic of plant medicines. But many are wondering how to make Ceremonial Cacao. What makes ceremonial cacao so special is its ease — it doesn’t ask for a strict diet, long preparation, or a journey deep into the jungle. Cacao invites itself gently into your everyday life, wherever you are.

How to Make Ceremonial Cacao:

1. Choose your cacao mindfully.
Pick a direct-trade, ceremonial-grade cacao that honors the plant spirit and source.

2. Warm water is your friend.
Ceremonial cacao is traditionally prepared with hot, unsweetened oat or coconut milk. Heat your water to about 130–140°F (55–60°C).

3. Mix with intention.
Add your cacao to your milk and whisk until smooth and creamy. I suggest using a milk foamer for this step. Optionally, you can add spices like cinnamon, chili, or a touch of natural sweetener if you wish — but keep it simple to honor the cacao’s pure essence.

4. Create your sacred space.
Light a candle, burn some sage or palo santo, or set out crystals. Take a few deep breaths and invite calm and openness into your heart.

5. Set an intention or offer a prayer.
Speak your heart — what do you want to invite in for the day?

6. Sip slowly and mindfully.
Allow the cacao to open your senses and soften your heart. Feel its warmth move through you, gently releasing what no longer serves.

7. Reflect, meditate, or go about your day.
Stay present with whatever arises for as long as you can. Thoughts, emotions, visions, or simply calm may be present for you. If you can, honor these for a moment before continuing with your day.

Alternately, just carry Cacao with you — in your thermos, on your morning commute, or to the soccer game. Let cacao be a companion, no matter where your day takes you.
